Police are investigating after vandals smashed dozens of windows at the old Union Station in Brownsville Monday.

Keith Hicks, who runs the Travel with Jesus Mission in the Union Station building, said vandals broke out about 20 windows in the back of the building.

“Kids should mind their own business and do what they’re doing instead of tearing up people’s property,” Hicks said. “They stole pipes, electric lines and stuff that we really do need. It’s hurting us and kind of forcing us out.”

Brownsville Mayor Lester Ward and members of the redevelopment group toured the building Tuesday. Ward said the vandalism is sad, but won’t stop Brownsville from moving forward.

“We don’t look at the decay,” Ward said. “We look at the beautiful architecture and the inside. We are looking at that and know we can redevelop. Hope is there.”

Anyone with information on the vandalism is asked to contact police.
